We here at FourThousand are all a little bit queer, some more then others, some more then they would like to admit. Some have been a little bit queerer for a little bit longer, but do not fear age will not weary them. Luckily for us, we can just remember the first Brisbane Queer Film Festival, or at minimum the fabulous Opening Gala Night parties that have come and gone over the years. Sigh, the memories.
Nine years later, this year's Opening Night party features a very special guest all the way from New York, DJ Sammy Jo. Sammy's not just eye candy - he is also the Scissor Sisters' official touring DJ, knowing how to spin the perfect blend of house, electro and dark disco.
What separates this year's Brisbane Queer Film Festival from those in the past is, for the first time, the week-long festival will open with a program of ten short films, mostly from Brisbane filmmakers. The opening night audience will get to chance to vote for their favourite film, with the winner receiving the necessary pink dollars to spruce their talents at the QPix filmmaking resource centre in Woolloongabba.
Celebrating the best of queer film from across the globe, the 9th Annual Brisbane Queer Film Festival is the biggest yet. With something for everyone, this festival has become an institution on the Brisbane cultural landscape, a landscape that once was not so comfortable with celebrating everything queer.
