I am an enormous Terminator fan. As evidence I present my rather tragic Terminator head cake. And now goddamned Batman has ruined my favourite franchise.
Arguably, 2003's Terminator 3: Gubernatorial Campaign Video already ruined the franchise. Others reckon it's director McG's fault for reducing the Terminator questions about predestination and humanity to a frenzy of blowing shit up. But Christian Bale is the real problem. As human resistance leader John Connor he's alternately dour and furious, and reportedly demanded script rewrites to give him more screen time. And, well, you've heard what he was like on set.
Batman aside, Terminator Salvation isn't that bad. The action scenes and robot effects are amazing, and there are plenty of fun nods to the franchise's history - Gunners, anyone? Condemned criminal Marcus Wright (an excellent Sam Worthington) mysteriously wakes up in 2018 to discover that an artificial intelligence network, Skynet, has unleashed nuclear hell and spectacular killer robots on humankind.
Hearing Connor's inspirational radio broadcasts, Marcus seeks him out, along with Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin), the teenager who'll eventually become John Connor's dad. But Connor is horrified to discover that Marcus is really a terminator - news that, understandably, also bums Marcus out. Still, Marcus may be humanity's - and the film's - salvation.
