Most of the time, when people feel like getting all classy and European and provocative on first dates, they’ll just grab a French film on their way home from work. There are only a few clever, one-track-minded amigos around this town who know the truth: Spanish cinema is what you watch when you want to inspire real passion.
The 11th Annual Spanish Film Festival, screening next week at Palace Centro, presents a cutting-edge overview of today’s Spanish film production. Opening with the dramatic comedy Siete mesas de billar francés (7 Billiards Tables)—a tale of two women traversing their differences through their commons grief at the death of a loved one—the Spanish Film Festival presents 29 features, three documentaries, and two programs of short films. And almost half of the films are by first time directors.
It would be fair to say that these new films are passionate and hot-blooded, like the old Spanish stereotype. But the Spanish cinema of today is also beautiful, intimate, artful, global and challenging—basically everything you want from a part time lover.
The festival is only in town for five days, so don’t waste any time on the getting-to-know-you nonsense, just get amongst it and enjoy!
