The Resident Evil series is now as much of a bloated mutated mess as its inhabitants. Movie, spinoffs and remakes have created a mythos that only its creators could love.

That being said, RE4 was also one of the most celebrated games of the last generation of consoles and one of GameCube's few quality, mature titles.

Hoping to build on that goodwill, RE5 takes much of what made RE4 great while adding co-operative play (online or split screen), a fresh lick of high-definition paint and a controversial new setting.

Set in Africa, outside and mostly during daylight hours, it forgoes much of its trademark atmosphere. This is replaced by an entertaining, action-style game which truly shines in co-op even if you still shoot like a human turret. Messy fun.
