Nobody intuitively grasps the poetics of action like John Woo. And this stunning Chinese historical epic shows the veteran director at the top of his game, blending military tactics and feats of battlefield athleticism with lyrical moments of music, poetry and tea ceremony. The most expensive Asian-financed movie ever, Red Cliff was originally released in two parts. We're getting the trimmed-down version of two-and-a-half-hours!

This famous Chinese story blends history and literature in a similar way to King Arthur or Robin Hood. But Woo based his film on the more historically accurate Chronicle of Three Kingdoms, rather than the novel Romance Of The Three Kingdoms. It recreates a 208 AD battle between the vast army and navy of power-hungry Prime Minister Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) and a much more tentative alliance between two southern warlords. But the real treat is watching a professional friendship build between the allied forces' respective strategists, Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Zhou Yu (Tony Leung).

Visually, Red Cliff is breathtaking - there's a truly stupendous one-shot sequence following a flying dove (can't have a John Woo film without doves!) across the Yangtze. Don't miss this on the big screen.
