Don't be fooled by the fact that Martin McDonagh's In Bruges stars legendary douchebag Colin Farrell. Gone is his whiplash-inducing Miami Vice-era pout, replaced here with his native Irish accent and type-shattering performance as Ray, an alternate universe Father Dougal McGuire. Instead of being a priest, he's hired to kill them.

Ray is sent to Belgium with Ken (Brendan Gleeson) by their enigmatically batshit boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to hide out after a hit gone wrong. Ray prefers to drink while Ken wants to read Penguin classics and sightsee, but within this tension lies the groundwork for an intense study of loyalty, guilt and responsibility, full of pathos and wit in equal measure.

This simple yet gripping story is carried effortlessly by McDonagh's fast, clever and frequently hilarious script. And let's face it: if a cynical, racist midget, the artwork o fHieronymus Bosch and the string of references to Nicholas Roeg's awesome 1973 film Don't Look Now aren't enough to woo you, then your heart deserves to stay made of stone.
