If the pages of Handmade Nation the book are anything to go by, the world of artists and crafters sure is an intriguing one. Their stories, their studios, their curious creations. It's all a wonderfully tangled colourful web of creativity and counter-culture and grassroots community. An exploration of how handmade knitted tea cosies say f-you to the man. How you can then make that man yourself out of felt and paddle pop sticks...

Like rock music in its day, crafting is - believe it or not - a vibrant, hectic, cutting-edge subculture, albeit with slightly less sex and drugs. This inherent intrigue is what drove American crafter Faythe Levine to make a documentary film about the crafting phenomenon and re-emergence of DIY she saw going on around her. Documenting the lives, creations, passions and politics of over 80 artists/crafters across the country, Handmade Nation opens our eyes to a new and underground America, and is guaranteed to change your perception of things next time you visit etsy.

Brisbane's gotten lucky this year with Melbourne Fashion Week's Stitches and Craft Show paying us a visit - even luckier is the free screenings of Handmade Nation right throughout the week. So as the recession deepens and you know that soon you probably won't be able to afford socks, you'd be totes crazy to miss it.
