There's nothing like a catastrophe or two to bring the good citizens of a city together. Humans make new friends easily when bad things happen because we all love banging on about our problems to anyone who'll listen. Seriously, just try it - strike up a friendly banter with a stranger about the floods or your disappearing superannuation investments, and who knows what romance might present itself?

But hang on. What good is romance without a single-screen independent cinema anywhere in the city? That's right, just when we thought we couldn't handle another catastrophe, we have to deal with the fact that the Dendy Cinema in George Street is closing down for good. The single-screener is closing its curtains this Friday night, just two years short of her one hundredth birthday.

Whilst this is obviously devastating, the news isn't all bad. Because not only will you still be able to get your fix of indie cinema at Dendy's Portside, you can pay your respects to the historic venue this Friday night, when the film rolls one last time for ‘George's Final Bow.' Bring a lover, an enemy, or just yourself - we'll all be in this together watching Amelie, drinking excessively at the awesome afterparty, and crying whilst dodging flying fence-posts and tree branches on the walk home.
