The first time I ever met Dave Zwolenski was in 2002 when I was falling asleep in an "Introduction to Creative Writing" lecture at QUT. All I remember is this energetic goofy guy fidgeting in his seat who probably turned around to say something lame like, "so how did you go with your assignment?" At first I thought he was one of those weird "writer" guys but it didn't take me too long to work out that Dave was actually one of the coolest people in the entire world.
Anyway it's now six years later and it seems television broadcaster SBS has also cottoned on to Dave's overwhelming awesomeness. They wanted to make a documentary about Australia's most controversial Muslim figure and naturally they asked him to front it. So in April this year, Dave moved in with Sheik Hilaly.
For several weeks, Dave prayed with the guy, washed with him, and ate with him on a quest to better understand Islam and Australian-Muslim culture. Basically the whole thing completely kicks the ass of anything that's been done on the topic to date. With moments like Sheik tying a scarf around Dave's neck and declaring "The end of Saddam" how could you argue?
