What’s that saying? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer? Well if anything, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead encourages you to keep your family closer still.
Andy Hanson (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a conniving finance executive failing at the money market who convinces his younger sibling Hank (Ethan Hawke) to be his main man on a jewellery heist. And the store they target places them in such close proximity that they are surely not to be considered suspects. The reason: it is their parents’ store.
As expected the master crime goes awry and the characters are all left scrambling to clear their names, pass the buck and get out of it alive. Told from different character’s recollections the story is a rich tapestry of perspectives; a real return to form by director Sidney Lumet.
With their father (Albert Finney) obliviously charging about in pursuit of justice and Andy’s wife Gina (Marisa Tomei) hiding an affair with Hank, a set of narrow misses avoid possible narrative aneurysm and builds the film up into a climatic ending.
