Ever since that summer day back in 1984 when Paul Hogan said he'd "throw another shrimp on the barbie" bbq's and G'day have become synonymous with being Aussie. The glitch is we just say prawn, shrimps are for yanks. Whichever way you like to peel 'em - this phrase has infiltrated pop-culture worldwide and Australia Day is the time to crank the gas, fire up the coals and celebrate our great Aussie icon, the bbq.
Here are some amazing places to pick up your snags/ kebabs / seafood:
- Toowong Village Meats (the best kebabs ever) 3870 9649
- Rayners Gourmet Meats: 882 Brunswick Street, New Farm
- Clancy James Taringa, Yeronga
- James Street Markets, New Farm
- Gambaro's wholesale seafood, Hope Street, East Brisbane
Gourmet is nice and all, but there is nothing wrong with picking up some budget snags at Coles, cooking them till they're almost black and serving them with lashings of tomato sauce on a slice of bread. If you don't know the first thing about starting a bbq, let alone cooking meat - then there's always Bunnings - most of the larger stores have a bbq set-up out front - for just 2 bucks you can get your bbq processed meat fix and feel very Australian while looking at tools and backyard improvement ideas. Strewth!
