Once upon a time Stephan’s Tower wasn’t tucked away in West End. No, no, the Skyneedle (or “Night Companion” as it was known) stood tall and proud in he middle of Little Stanley Street in South Bank and projected a beam of light that could be seen up to 60 kilometers away.
And you could catch a monorail from one end of the parklands to the other. Then wander the pavilions from more than 50 countries, collecting stamps for your “passport” as you went. Ah, good times.
During the Expo 88 20 year anniversary celebrations you can wander the park and try to imagine what it was like. Brisbane City Council have put together an Expo Trail which plots out spots of particular significance. The trail culminates in a memorabilia display where you can visually paw over piles of Expo badges, catalogues and stuffed platypus toys. Pick up a tour map at the South Bank Visitor Centre and get back to 88!
