‘Presentation Evening' That's what my school called its award ceremony. It was kind of novel ‘cause if you were smart and/or sporty (in my case both) then you got to have a day off school, go to the practise and watch everyone pretend-accept awards, all whilst eating lots of junk food like it was entertainment or something. By the time the real deal came, the sugar highs had worn off, you were shit-scared of tripping over on stage and everyone was sick of shaking the gangly Principals hand or some old biddy that had donated a lot of dosh to the school.
Well those days are over - now it's all about red carpets and winning big bucks! The Queensland New Filmmakers Awards (yep, that stands for QNFA) are presented by Warner Roadshow Studios and over the last 20 years, judges have viewed over 2000 films and presented over 250 awards of excellence, with a prize pool totalling almost $300 000 (plus atleast a kiddies pool worth of bubbly).
In the past winners from these awards have gone onto be showcased at Cannes and the Berlin Film Festivals. So if you want to check out some of the contestants / competition and/or you actually really enjoyed ‘Presentation Night' then you'll love the Awards Ceremony too. Plus, there's a licensed bar instead of a coke machine.

FourThousand is a subcultural guide to Brisbane, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Brisbane writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FourThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
