Sitting in the dark with just the dim light of a candle fighting back the impending black may be the year-round favoured pastime of the goth kids, but there are two ways you too can become a temporary creature of the night: either ignore your bills long enough that your electricity gets cut off, or take part in Earth Hour. The former will stay on your credit record for up to 5-years, the latter will help draw awareness to energy consumption. The preference seems easy.
Leaving your TV on standby uses more power than you think. And that little green display on your microwave does too. And if you pull out your mobile charger and turn off appliances you’re not using you’ll reduce your yearly energy consumption by about 10%?
It’s these obscure tidbits that Earth Hour wants to spread. Not just for the sake of fueling your polite conversation and green-cred, but for increasing everyone’s awareness on simple ways they can be part of addressing climate change. Reigning Mayoral Champion “Can Do” Campbell is doing it. He’s pulling the plug on The Storey Bridge, City Hall, the William Jolly Bridge and Brisbane Square. If the Libs can do it, then so should you!
