Most of the ultra-trendy fashion precinct of James Street is bold, postmodern architecture; all steel, plate glass and bits jutting out. But you’ll also find a quaint English-style cottage that houses Brisbane’s newest boutique. Introducing: The Standard.

Run by the crew behind Lucid Laundry, The Standard is a smaller, more intimate shopping experience than its Brunswick Street sibling. If you’re lucky you might even catch owner Peter Dynes working on one of his paintings on-site.

The Standard aims to cater to a more ‘mature’ market looking for quality sophisticated-casual and street wear. Among the neatly folded items you’ll find RAER, Ksubi and Nudie Jeans, as well as a range of upmarket international pieces for the more cashed-up browser.

The collection of goods is diverse: from sleek men’s button-ups and glitzy sequinned dresses to quality printed tees. And a host of accessories for both sexes.

The setting is adorable and the smell of spray paints and oils add a certain dizzy charm. With parking available directly aside the store, and a big sale spinning huge reductions until the end of the month, there’s more than one reason to keep driving a little bit further down James Street.
