What do you do when you're from Amsterdam, nuts for bikes, have a heightened sense of fashion and culture - but you live in Brisbane? Duh! Silly, you open a small, independent bike shop in West End - that way you can talk about bikes all day long and stock all your favourite clothing brands and super handy bike gadgets - and since it's your shop - you'll probably get a discount. This is never having to grow-up, the smart grown-up way.
Erik Van Genderen is clearly the newest cool kid on the block, welcome his baby, GEAR - it's tiny shop full of fashions from RockersNYC, Fuct, Rockwell to name just a few - oh and watches by Nooka! But this shop is really all about catering to the fixed bike fiend - GEAR stocks vintage and new bikes and parts and accessories: check out these leather gloves from Knog and these from A.P.C., although he doesn't stock those - yet - Erik's blog is all up to date on the latest in biking technology. GEAR also stocks a range of dope art books, magazines and DVDs.
Hook up with Erik if you want to get the skinny on some organised fun too - he likes to arrange fixed gear bike events and movie nights! Just pop into the store and introduce yourself - oh and did I mention how European the store's fit-out is: it's clean, white and deceivingly spacious. God love the Dutch!
