SHOP is your guide to boutique fashion and retail in Brisbane, featuring pop-up shops and other places that are so hard to find that Google doesn't even know about them yet. SHOP attempts to open your minds, hearts and wallets to the plethora of things that you can probably live without but in actuality don't want to. Clothes, jewellery, books, bikes, bags, shoes, bags that look like shoes - SHOP gives new meaning to the superficial - wait, we're confused.
What more could a girl (or boy) want? Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Missoni, you name it - Mint Vintage has got it. Priding themselves on stocking high quality, one-off pieces from world renowned couture designers, their eBay site and Facebook page is packed with loads of things which can break the bank, hey but who cares, it looks freaking cool.
Eighty years old and still got it; family-run Gardams Fabrics is an absolute institution to those who have a fondness for fine fabric and finishes. Visit either their City or Indooroopilly stores for bolts of inspiration beckoning to be whipped up into whatever your heart desires.
Gardams buyers travel the world securing the latest fabrics and colours from the likes of Italy, France, India, China, Japan, Britain and of course Australia.
To many Northsiders, Retro Stop on constantly heaving Lutwyche Road will seem like old news. But as a fresh member to the block, I feel compelled to share my discovery in my new, albeit colourful neighbourhood.
Completely run, loved and nurtured by two friends and lovely ladies to boot, Retro Stop is a haven for vintage and retro pieces.
You know that voice in your head? The one that sounds a little bit like your Mum's and tell you to do sensible things, like ‘save your money for a rainy day'. This is the same voice that gives you hell when you make an extravagant fashion purchase. Well... when this happens you can now politely turn around to that voice and say ‘You never know what tomorrow will bring.
My my, Brisbane sure is getting conceptual. First there's Garuva dining in the dim, then Donna Marcus' giant balls in Brisbane Square, then that darn knitting needle bridge. Here to out-gawk them all (in a good way) is Arthur Street Market - the conceptual fashion pop-up store off James Street.
Like a cuckolded lover, I spent countless months struggling through Scandinavian fashion websites for any glimpse of Carin Wester. A little grey jumpsuit here, a cropped turtle neck knit there. Words like ‘skor' and ‘skyddsomslag' rolled forth from my tongue, I could convert the Swedish Kroner into Australian dollars whilst assembling an Olof lamp and eating the meatballs I'd gotten from the IKEA foodcourt.
With Viktor and Rolf's ready-to-wear looking more like something you'd don in a parallel universe where it's possible to wear architecturally sculpted cutout purple tulle without getting stuck in the elevator - (who am I kidding, they wouldn't have elevators there, they'd float between streams of being in boats made of fairy floss and twine) - it's kind of refreshing to find a label taking things towards the specific and fundamental characteristics of clothing design.
