Going to the hairdresser can be a painful experience at times. Clusters of shrill, inane girls shouting one-way conversation over loud pop music; or the more upmarket salons where you are made to feel guilty for washing your hair too little, or too often, and each split-end is examined with disdain. Thankfully, at Edward Hui, it is nothing but a pleasure.
Upon first entry to the salon you are confronted with several hundred amazing owl ornaments spread over the counter and several cabinets. Most of them are large-eyed, vintage and completely adorable. Your heart may skip a beat of excitement thinking they are for sale, but no - Edward soon informs you they are his own personal collection, lovingly gathered for over 30 years.
Luckily collecting owls is not the only thing Edward is good at - he also gives a hell of a haircut. After almost three decades in the biz, he's proficient at every cut, colour and style for both men and women. I think his former clientele - including Kevin Rudd, Lady Flo, and even Margaret Thatcher(!) - speaks for itself, and is just one testament to Edward's renowned customer care and attention to make sure you always leave with exactly what you want.
Unfortunately, if what you want is the tiny vintage owl sitting behind his counter, you won't get it.
