SHOP is your guide to boutique fashion and retail in Brisbane, featuring pop-up shops and other places that are so hard to find that Google doesn't even know about them yet. SHOP attempts to open your minds, hearts and wallets to the plethora of things that you can probably live without but in actuality don't want to. Clothes, jewellery, books, bikes, bags, shoes, bags that look like shoes - SHOP gives new meaning to the superficial - wait, we're confused.
A new store has nested on the ever-evolving Arthur Street strip tucked just off James Street. Ivy + Bird is the creation of Brisbane-based jewellery and accessories designer, Maria Diakos. It's an inviting space that will inspire creativity. I walked in to be greeted by a lovely staff member busily sewing the finishing touches on a piece who warmly welcomed me whilst I pawed through and discovered the hidden treasures.
Queensland's design and art scene will be coming up roses this weekend when The Finders Keepers hitch a ride north to flaunt trestle tables' worth of local and interstate talent.
With all the sophistication of a design expo, the pizzazz of a local market, the creative prowess of a magical 3D Etsy-land plus hospitality and entertainment that better a school fete (including a garden café, bar and live music), The Finders Keepers is its own little microcosm of markety goodness.
You know how they say ‘when one door closes another opens'... Well, it's certainly true of 102 Latrobe Tce. While some still mourn the loss of Hot Chocolate and those ridiculous milkshakes, we'd like to make very welcome Latrobe's newest resident, Kazuyo.
This quaint, discerning store houses the most remarkable collection of traditional and contemporary Japanese design.
Attention overly-patriotic Australians: it's time to take down the Australian flags you taped to your car windows for Australia Day. Yes, white Barina parked at McWhirters on Saturday night - I am talking to you. I don't want to get all Sam Kekovich on you, but if you really want to do your country a favour, buy Australian made instead.
It's that time of year again, when Brisbane goes a little bit Project Runway and our best young designers come out to strut their stuff. Sure, we didn't get to see all the buttons, threads and tears along the way (oh, pun cringe). But do get to glimpse (and purchase) the lovingly-created and creatively-lovely end products, from local designers who could well be on their way to becoming the next big thing.
Going to the hairdresser can be a painful experience at times. Clusters of shrill, inane girls shouting one-way conversation over loud pop music; or the more upmarket salons where you are made to feel guilty for washing your hair too little, or too often, and each split-end is examined with disdain.
In Brisbane, there are only so many places you can find the latest, the kitschest and the cleverest in gifts and general ‘Ooh, look at this dandy little thing I found at this cute little shop...' Located right smack bang on the corner of Ann and Warner Streets, man! those lights take sooo long to change, by the time you cross over to MOD.
