READ covers fiction, fanzines, zines with no fans except for us, websites, blogs, magazines, artist's books and other independent releases. Chances are, if it's been published then we know about it and chances are, if it's not in FourThousand, then we didn't like it. READ is for people who were born with ink in their veins and a fat balding critic on their shoulder. READ has also created more best-sellers than Oprah's Book Club and more wannabe to be writers than Hunter S Thompson.
Introducing the world's finest universal comic, Sup-Ho 1, from the legendary Dead Xerox Press reclusive island base, with no electricity, seven hours by boat from mainland NZ. In the creator's own words this issue came out "a bit weird" but weird is what we like and... just because the printing has come out a little disjointed doesn't mean this isn't an ace read.
Mixtapes were, without a doubt, the best thing about the 20th Century. The Theory of Relativity, Cornflakes, Penicillin, teabags, sporks, velcro, crayons and the frisbee were all quite impressive inventions, but I'm sure you'll agree there's a clear winner here. Where was the frisbee when you were clumsily trying to hammer your angsty teenage feelings into a shape another person might understand, hmmm? Where was Einstein when your 'soulmate' dumped you for that dude with the hair? Did Penicillin save you when you were so sick with love you sang 'The End of the Road' 17 times on a deserted beach? No.
Nothing divides sentient humanity like a summer reading list, so I want to clarify that the following books have been chosen according to a unique set of criteria that I made up just then. Will it make me look smart if falls out my bag? Is it waterproof? Can I email the author if I want to ask annoying questions? Can I use it as an excuse for being disorganised about Christmas? In many cases below, the answer is yes.
Can you hear the distant rustling of the leaves? Well, let me tell you, they're not leaves at all, but birds that are trying to escape from Devendra Banhart's beard. Count em' and weep. Yeah, I thought Will Oldham was the current Lord of hair farming, but according to the Indie Rock Colouring Book, I was wrong.
BATS. is a Brisbane based zine made by a collection of girls with an average age of 16.6 years. They might be collectively underage, but what they lack in adulthood they make up for in attitude and street-sense. In fact, being 18 never made anyone any smarter or for that matter, cooler. BATS. is satirical, it's dark, it's original and it truly hits the nail on the head when it comes to a triumphant first-issue-zine.
Like Hemmingway and his daiquiri, collaborative efforts generally involve violent heartache, breathtaking beauty and copious amounts of alcohol. Midnight Morning is no different. These art-nouveau-graphic-novel-Hello-Kitty-inspired illustrations are an expression of three Sydney-based illustrators' temperamental journey of love and devastation.
