Australia's got talent. No seriously, we do. Okay, I'm not talking any Susan Boyle ‘singing sensation plucked from the mountains of Scotland' type thing, but we sure can write a good story. So if you're looking to expand your reading list beyond just the pages of Twitter, then this might be the book for you.
New Australian Stories showcases the work of 35 emerging and established writers across a range of genres - folks who could very well be tomorrow's Tim Winton or Kate Grenville or (surely there's someone else to reference here?). Stand out stories include Chris Womersley's confronting snapshot of life in Melbourne's Fitzroy, to Wayne Macauley's bizarrely-fascinating farmshed mystery piece.
While a novel is a big commitment to make - a long term, monogamous relationship with book and page (have you tried reading two at once? - it does not work); the short story seduces us like any good fling... Whether you're left satisfied or disappointed completely, it doesn't really matter: at least you only wasted 20 minutes of your time.
