If you would say you love reading about sad people not expressing their feelings properly, what you're really saying is that you like Canadian fiction. And one of the best recent exponents of this is doctor-turned-author Vincent Lam, whose collection of linked short stories, Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, is one of the freshest pieces of writing released this year.
In his stories, Lam harnesses beautifully the power of a short story in examining the lives of a group of young doctors. Everything is in there: from the nervous excitement of medical exams to the heart-stopping drama of the emergency room, to the middle-aged moral quandaries of a travelling physician.
Lam is going to be in Australia for Sydney Writers Festival, so you know he must be good.
