I really don't want to undersell this one. READ doesn't quite do it justice. If just for this issue there was a ‘Praise,' ‘Worship' or ‘Best Cook Book Ever' category, then I'd feel a bit better about the whole thing.
To some people this may be just a regular cookbook. I don't want to start off on the wrong foot here, but if you fit in this category then you were seriously deprived as a kid. Yep, sorry ‘bout that.
For all of you out there that know the joys of the original Women's Day Birthday Cake Cook Book, I know you're with me on this one. This book was the 80s youth's ticket to a world filled with flowers made from marshmallows and jelly filled swimming pools. Each page is like Willy freakin' Wonka on a plate. Although it's difficult to fault it, I do have to draw the line at the duck cake. Why anyone would wait all year to celebrate their birthday with a cake in the shape of a duck with white icing covered in popcorn and two chips for a beak beats me? Icing + popcorn = wrong. Also the sewing basket was a bit random, but with chocolate biscuits covering it, I'll let it slide.
And as for the highlights, according to an expert panel of boys (consisting of my brother and boyfriend) the cricket pitch, the train, the pirate, the helicopter (if your mum could make it) guaranteed a happy birthday. And for the little ladies it was all about the butterfly, the bunny rabbit, Little Miss Muffit and anything that involved a doll or a flower - naturally.
So for those Women's-Weekly-cake deprived kids, don't despair. It's never two late to bake a cake in the shape of a 1 and cover it in Smarties. And if you could make two zeros also and bring it to our party that'd be great, k thx bye.

FourThousand is a subcultural guide to Brisbane, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Brisbane writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FourThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
