If you grew up in Brisbane - it's safe to say, without a doubt - that you've been to the Valley Pool at least once. Those deep blue lines are home to some of the truest, bluest swimmers around - if Leisel Jones, Libby Lenton and ‘The Lapdogs' mean anything to you? (Rumour has it the sheer, unrelenting commitment and determination of the ‘LD's' recently sent Libby packing her bags for the bluer lanes of Sydney?). It seems the Valley's 50m pool can only fit so many stars.

Local gossip aside, it's time to face facts: swimming is bloody good for you - ever since the womb we humans crave the rejuvenation that comes being immersed in bodies of water. It's almost poetic - what's not poetic is the extra ‘winter skin' some of us have piled on. One word: kickboard. It's time to don the lycra, pick out the wedgies and stride confidently towards the glistening blue. It's kinda like migrating north and shedding your coat for summer. If you're already looking hot-to-trot, then you can sun yourself on the green lawns and make the rest of us feel guilty.
