What was it that lured all of Brisbane's dressed-to-impress it-kids to a dark Valley alleyway on a very chilly April night? Curvy 5 of course! (Although the large offering of free beer may have also played a part). For those of you not familiar, Curvy is an annual design publication put out by YEN Magazine: a beautiful bound collection of the work of 100 of the world's best female illustrators, designers and artists.

Brisbane was the second stop on the east coast exhibition and launch tour for the book, which is now in its fifth year. While 2008 could not top last year's launch – which featured famous French graff-artist Fafi, who splashed her delightful femme characters across the front pages of Curvy and the streets of inner-city Melbourne – Curvy 5 certainly does not disappoint. Each deliciously matte page invites the viewer to an indulgence of colour and creativity, from stunning portraits to mythical creatures and other things of the beautifully kooky and surreal. It sets well-known artists such as Betsy Walton and Australia's own fashion mag darling Kareena Zerfos among other women plucked from obscurity but surely headed for big things.
