Novels of drug-fuelled desperation in West End; songs of subtropical heartbreak, or that inevitable poem referencing the Brisbane River. You have to admit that the essence of Brisbane has been captured about three million times, thanks to the efforts of this city’s prolific creative writers, painters, poets and musicians.
We’re not saying that’s a bad thing, we’re just suggesting that sometimes you have to take things back to the source. That’s what local photographer Mark Lobo is doing. He sets out with his camera to capture what he thinks is most compelling about Brisbane – everyday people like you and me.
His ongoing portraiture project BNE features interesting and inspirational people from all corners of Brisbane who have a story to tell. Normally shooting subjects in their home environments, Lobo has an incredible skill to capture emotion and, believe it or not, happiness. What’s even better is that there’s not a single shot of the Brisbane River to be seen.
