Description:
I’ll be the first to admit that I was an easily scared child. But possibly the thing which scared me most was those old 80’s horror movies called ‘Children of the Corn.' Even today, I become incredibly uncomfortable when people insist on using the words ‘Corn Field’ ‘Teenage Girl’ and ‘Murder’ in the same sentence.

‘Magda’s Fascination with Wax Cats’ is a new play being shown as part of the Metro Arts Independent Program. Whilst it’s about a murder, a cornfield and a teenage girl, I’m relieved to say it’s both nothing like, and a hell of a lot better than, those old movies.

The play follows an incident of a murder in a small Australian town, witnessed by a teenage girl. It’s a wild ride through those feral country cornfields you moved to Brisbane to get away from. Poetic and unpleasant, sensual and scary; this play manages to turn brutal into a shade of beautiful.
