It’s not often that the Gold Coast out-cools Brisbane. But on the two weeks of the year that it does, it’s so amazing that it actually makes up for the rest of the time. This is why we’re simply going to ignore the fact that we’re meant to be telling you about what’s happening in Brisbane, to focus instead on the second annual Tales from the Cold Ghost exhibition, opening this Saturday night in Mermaid Beach.

Curated by the non profit artist-run initiative tinygold, Tales from the Cold Ghost presents eighty-five brand new artworks from twenty six emerging Queensland painters, photographers, installation artists, mixed media artists, jewelers and film makers. And no, they won’t be exhibited on flimsy display boards in Cavill Avenue. They’ve found a new home in a dazzling fresh-from-the-womb contemporary artspace in Mermaid Beach, 19 Karen.

In fact we should probably get used to the Gold Coast out-cooling us a little more often from now on, as after the Tales show, 19 Karen will start operating as a contemporary artspace whose focus will be on promoting emerging artists from around Australia. As we erase the meter maids and fake tans from our collective consciousness, we feel a strange sense of contentment knowing there’s finally something gold on the Gold Coast.
