With nearly every inner-city warehouse or abandoned shopfront being transformed into something cool and cultured and cutting-edge these days, you can't help but notice that Brisbane is definitely on the edge of that oh-so-desirable thing called ‘progress'. But instead of another hole-in-the-wall cafe or overpriced children's wear boutique, the clever people at QCP have worked their magic on a rundown corner of Russell Street to suavely unveil us the brand new Queensland Centre for Photography.
It's a classy, contemporary, champagne-in-hand sort of affair, but by no means uninviting. The photography on show (as part of the gallery's debut exhibition ‘New Skin': Contemporary Queensland Photo-media) ranges from the classically beautiful to the stark, the surprising and even the kitsch (you must look at the 3D holga piece of Barbie and the peacock in the front window... If only for the peacock). You'll find a host of QCA talent working hard behind the scenes, including many students volunteering their time to staff the gallery during its regular daily opening hours Wed-Sun.
Exhibitions will be changing quickly, so get in by Feb 22 before the next crop takes over. Contemporary photography really doesn't get much better than this.
