A famous architect once said: "architecture is the highest form of art." Clearly modesty was left at the drawing board in this case, but that's no reason to dismiss those for whom it goes hand in hand with talent.

As a change from its regular preference for artist's collections, this month GoMA is getting its arch-nerd on and bringing us Place Makers: a celebration of Queensland architecture over the last 15 years, and the largest exhibition of contemporary architecture ever staged in an Australian art museum.

The exhibition will feature scaled model-replicas of the state's leading architectural designs (incredible in their complexity, and better than any damn dollhouse you've ever seen); as well as sketches, photographs, animations, documentaries and time-lapse camera-reels all exploring and celebrating the idea of 'place'.

The models are fascinating in and of themselves: tiny, intricate and perfectly detailed, with impeccable craftsmanship by a team of UQ architecture students. All in all, Place Makers promises to be the underground exhibition of the year.

It's not art, it's arch: but best of all, it's FREE.
