Is it wrong for us to suggest it's a lot safer to partake in cultural activities in the Brisbane CBD now that the Victory Hotel has burnt down? Hey, we're just putting it out there that there might be some kind of renaissance of cool in the city sometime in the future. For example the renovations in King George Square have nearly been finished, and damn does that concrete look skateable. And just next door, the Museum of Brisbane has this rad new exhibition that disrupts the notion of architecture. Sort of like skating in King George Square but with heaps more cubism.
While most artists arrange or display in a gallery space, Bruce Reynolds uses the space itself as the object for contemplation via clever and discrete interventions. Staying true to the notion of cubism where objects are broken up, analysed, and re-assembled in abstracted form, Reynolds has created some site-specific collages using commercial Axminster carpet and plaster cornice and maybe some other stuff. We recommend heading on down there and familiarising yourself with your new centre for leisure activities - the city.
