So, what about those hot chicks hustling Fitness First on the corner of Wickham and Brunswick Street in the Valley, huh? They're, um, persistent. I mean, they even hit me up yesterday when I was struggling home with six bags of groceries. Obviously they don't understand that walking four blocks with those bags is all the exercise I'm interested in.

That reflection might seem pretty far removed from ‘art' but if you explored that tangent a little bit further and threw in a little more critical analysis of the health and travel industries well you'd probably do like Brisbane artist Pat Hoffie and end up with an artwork like (deep breath) Madame Illuminata Crack's Phantasmagorical Armchair Exhibit for Ecologically Sustainable Recreation'.

Hoffie has constructed the installation using dysfunctional gym equipment and historical images of indentured South Sea Island labour especially for this exhibition. While I'm not too sure exactly what to expect, my flatmate assures me that it's going to be "amazing" and she's "really pissed off" that she has to work on opening night.

Drawing from extensive data compiled during package holiday experiences, aimless netsurfing and intermittent astral armchair travelling, the artist says that "this work promises nothing for the future' which I think is an altogether refreshing and completely legitimate statement in this age when everyone seems to think they're saving the world.
