People who say that there is no such thing as bad art are lying. LOOK takes an objective view of the subjective world and, with a free drink in our hand, guides you through Brisbane's best galleries and art exhibitions. From institutions to artist-run initiatives, installation to illustration, photography to painting, LOOK is an ongoing document of Brisbane's ever engaging and growing arts culture.
In the Big Red, test patterns are common occurrences due to, from what I can gather, either unremitting censorship, or lack of content. The artist Hu Jieming once constructed an artwork where he took stills from 24 hours worth of Chinese Television, and about 20% of the screen shots were test patterns.
The Versus Show is back for it's third (the charm) season. The two artists that have hitched their wagon to this shining star are the spark worthy Rob Scott and Nick Hornum. Bring on the fireworks we say.
The ‘versus' concept was spawned over a year ago by artist Mel Baxter (curator Curvy, Hand Drawn, New York Buck).
Did I just hear you say double trouble? No? Well it's coming 'atcha regardless. Two of Brisbane's prominent ARIs join together to launch two new exhibitions this weekend; the recently relocated Box Copy are giving us David Spooner, and No Frills* present our favourite Molly Ringwald lookalike, Sarah Byrne.
Thinking of getting Memento Mori tattooed on your chest? Don't. You might as well get the Chinese character for 'courage'. On another level are whole body tattoos - the graf on the temple of the holy skin kinda vibe. If you wanted to go extreme, you could get wizards praying to 2Pac riding a narwhal with a bong stem horn.
Justin Lee Williams would surely know a bit about ghosts and gods. Having recently moved to rural Victoria, I'm sure he's experienced plenty of both. If you ever had any sort of fascination with Polycephaly, the eeriness of nature, or the way time can twist your memories, you're bound to be fascinated with Mr.
With a name like Cloudy Messy Mucky Crystal Clear, you might be thinking of LA circa 2004. But this is no Hollywood! These artists scorn the gentrified trailer trash for coloured-in Gehry concert halls and post-post punks. People were yearning to create some mystical form that sought to delineate people's perceptions of a town supposedly set in stone.
It's only hip to be square right? And what better way to be square than to make some amazing fan art of your favourite bands. That's what Art2 is all about. No, it's not some drawing of Kurt Cobain from high school scrapbooks, but 2D adult-e-rated versions of some of our locally celebrated guitar-slinging, bass-toting, drum-belting, obscure Keralite instrument-blowing musicians.
