People who say that there is no such thing as bad art are lying. LOOK takes an objective view of the subjective world and, with a free drink in our hand, guides you through Brisbane's best galleries and art exhibitions. From institutions to artist-run initiatives, installation to illustration, photography to painting, LOOK is an ongoing document of Brisbane's ever engaging and growing arts culture.
TGIF really has come a very long way in this burgeoning town of ours. Yeh, a few years ago you would have sufficed with some after work drinks at Friday's (naturally). Hey, you can't be blamed - it was considered a hot place to be.
Nowadays there are more options, beside the obvious list of cooler places to drink; there's a gallery above Mellino's that's giving Brisbane a Brooklyn style and everyone is sipping on cold beers, talking art and possibility.
Justin Lee Williams would surely know a bit about ghosts and gods. Having recently moved to rural Victoria, I'm sure he's experienced plenty of both. If you ever had any sort of fascination with Polycephaly, the eeriness of nature, or the way time can twist your memories, you're bound to be fascinated with Mr.
Anticipation is a bitch. Corleone Russian Roulette. Waiting for aliens to finally take Fox Mulder. Hoping the world's new super-highways serve electric cars instead of just petrol fuelled 4WDs. Some HG Wells-inspired view of the world. Bleak or promising, that's what 3000AD is all about, and you can take a look for yourselves this weekend at Circle Gallery, tucked away on the less visited side of West End.
When you're walking past someone on the street talking into what appears to be thin air, and they're actually talking to someone through a mobile phone extender (handsfree) attached to their person, you get to wonder where everything is at. Sonya G Peters, however, doesn't have to wonder. She brings a little truth the term Renaissance Man (or Woman).
Do you ever miss getting trading cards from vending machines or rifling through your older brother's and/or sister's comic book collection while they're busy searching for your parents Vogues and/or Playboys? Were you ever a fan of Batman, Raymond Pettibon or those Australian painters compulsively obsessed with outlaws? Ever had visions of the room you're in distorting to the point where you've exacerbated your sanity? If you're in any way interesting in drawing or comic books or aforementioned lucidity, then you might care to head over to Flipbook Gallery this weekend where two locals are displaying their work for your viewing pleasure.
Normally we wouldn't quote directly from an artists bio because that's just plain lazy. But when it comes to shedding a little light on awesome UK artist French who is just about to open an exhibition at new gallery Nine Lives, there's no way that we can tell it any better than this:
"French is from Aldershot, but lives in Brixton.
So, what about those hot chicks hustling Fitness First on the corner of Wickham and Brunswick Street in the Valley, huh? They're, um, persistent. I mean, they even hit me up yesterday when I was struggling home with six bags of groceries. Obviously they don't understand that walking four blocks with those bags is all the exercise I'm interested in.
