Whoever said postrocking and shoegazing were out of style must have had their wires crossed with, I don't know, lets say steampunk or nüfunk. Christopher Langlois, who is showing his paintings at Heiser Gallery starting this weekend, will tell you postrock's equivalent in painting really is where the dime's being shined.
Taking cues from the great sublime landscape artists such as J.M.W. Turner, Arthur Streeton and Caspar David "That Old Chestnut" Friedrich, along with an inquisitiveness towards minimalism, Langlois produces landscapes that shift between the reality of solitary beachside holidays and the blurred Polaroids that half succeeded in their attempts to capture that moment. It's like you're Keanu Reeves in the Matrix but you actually got stuck somewhere inbetween the city you know and an archetypal Australian landscape. Akin to watching Paris, Texas, or listening to someone like Slint or Domakesaythink, if you stand infront of these paintings for long enough you might forget where your feet are firmly planted.
If you wanna go check the buzz on the quad, go catch a glimpse at what Langlois has to offer next week at Heiser Gallery.
