People who say that there is no such thing as bad art are lying. LOOK takes an objective view of the subjective world and, with a free drink in our hand, guides you through Brisbane's best galleries and art exhibitions. From institutions to artist-run initiatives, installation to illustration, photography to painting, LOOK is an ongoing document of Brisbane's ever engaging and growing arts culture.
You're in the middle of a grassy desert in north west New South Wales, it's 40 degrees, you're wearing your Kuta Lines*, waiting for a lift. A guy called Johnny Appleseed picks you up in a 1970s Mercedes Benz, which feels as though its literally gliding compared to what it would seem in the city. He's smoking tobacco that came from the 1950s.
Done any Christmas window shopping lately? Checked out Olivia the pig at the Myer windows in the city yet? Well if it's your kind of thing come down to the RawSpace windows and witness the latest offering from ARI and collective The Wandering Room. When You're Around sounds like a song lyric ('You Spin me Right Round Baby'), a line from a poem or part of conversation; as an exhibition theme it has provided a point of departure for featured artists Kristine Dragland, Peter Booth, The Wandering Room (David Creed, Sarah Werkmeister, Angela Rossitto, Alex Cuffe) and Isao Yamaguchi.
She goes to sleep humming the tunes of Hercules and Love Affair and her bedtime story consists of wandering though black and white pages of Helmut Newton photography. It's no wonder this clever designer wakes up filled the ideas of romance, old Hollywood and well, sex. While most of us just look down the bottom of a mug of coffee and wonder is that really the time?
Tonight is that time for Irena, time to step out of the proverbial closet and unleash her very first collection (drumroll please).
World's Best Practice refers to those business mantras you might hear coming from HR reps or motivational Chicken Soup. But most of us think it's a load of Judge Judy branded baloney. The 16 artists participating in Worlds Best Practice are the crème de le crème of emerging Brisbane artists, the top of the conveyor belt that pushes little chicken stock blocks of quality.
It seems as though Nine Lives Gallery can't stop kickin' out the jams and bringing some amazing talent to the board. This week sees an exhibition of something that's special in its own right, and not so oft practiced since the old inkjet came along. Alex Gillies, a man of many talents, presents us with the woodblock prints that he has fashioned with furious intent over the past year.
It's that time of year again; when The Zoo opens its doors, considering itself careless, fancy free, and invites y'all in to break a sweat, kick the jams, and check out I Used To Skate Once 5.
Put on by the wonderful people from The Outpost 'skate once' has become somewhat of a Brisbane institution, with each show becoming even more packed to the rafters and the artist list becoming bigger and better every time.
We're all going to die and everyone we know is going to die, too. It's useless to pretend otherwise, and why the long face? Death is funny haha and funny interesting, just like the rest of life. And who knows, it might be just around the corner, especially if you make a habit of attending exhibitions in Fortitude Valley.
