Rachel Surgeoner sits down (via the interweb) for a quick Q&A with frankie co-founder Louise Bannister. Read the scoop on one of frankie's leading ladies - everything from travels in Mexico to rubber stamp collecting and scars collected along the way...

Rachel: We all know the ladies at frankie love a good cup of tea, what's in your tea jar right now?
Louise: I'm a peppermint tea fan through and through. Although, with winter upon us, I do love having a milky rooibos tea with honey and soy. Delish.

R: How many candles did you blow out at your last birthday?
L: 31

R: What was your first ever job?
L: Earning five bucks an hour in a fish a chip shop. It was real dodgy and I still have the scars from the hot oil on my arms to prove it.

R: What year was frankie's initial conception? What were you doing for a crust at the time?
L: We launched frankie in September 2004 and Lara (founding creative director) and I were working on a girls teenage magazine for Morrison Media.

R: What keeps you enthused in the publishing industry, what really gets your creative juices bubbling?
L: I get inspired by talking to friends and family. You might be talking to them about something random and then think, hey that's a great book idea. It's funny how many ideas are right in front of you.

R: Are you crafty yourself - do you do much DIY or cooking?
L: I'm probably the least crafty in the team, can't really sew a straight line. But I love cooking and taking photos.

R: Are you a collector? If so, what do you collect?
L: My house is full of stored away kitschy vintage prints  which are patiently waiting to be put up (need a bigger space!) which my husband has collected over the years. I do have a small salt and pepper collection and just recently we visited the states and stumbled across the coolest rubber, wooden stamp shop. We spent hours in there, nattering to the eccentric old Irish owner and carefully choosing stamps for our new collection.

R: You took some time off frankie to travel overseas, where did you go? Do you have a favourite travel memory / place/ story?
L: We went to South America, Mexico, America and Canada for around 14 months. I loved it all - Mexico was just amazing and Peru - what a mind blowing place. I also lived in Yellowknife - 400km south from the arctic circle in Canada (where they filmed Ice Truckers). This wasn't my favourite place but it was pretty memorable.

R: frankie is known for it's clean and tidy design and it's use of white space, beautiful photography and illustration - what was the motivation behind this pastel palette?
L: Mmm, you'll have to come to Semi-Permanent to find out ! Basically it's to let the content breathe, so you're not distracted by the design.

R: Besides frankie, what other magazines do you enjoy?
L: I don't really read other magazines so much, if I pick one up it's usually a house inspired one - like Dwell.

R: What's a good website/ blog you've stumbled upon recently?
L: A ridiculous one I have stumbled across recently is shit my kids ruined - shitmykidsruined.tumblr.com

R: Are there any you follow religiously?
L: I like checking out what's happening on this blog every now and then - weloveyouso.com

R: What can Semi-Permanent goers expect to see and hear from your presentation? (other than visual kitsch candy) Will you be talking about putting a magazine together / the design process, the role of the editor?
L: It's taking listeners through the journey of frankie, from conception to present day.
