It seems as though Nine Lives Gallery can't stop kickin' out the jams and bringing some amazing talent to the board. This week sees an exhibition of something that's special in its own right, and not so oft practiced since the old inkjet came along. Alex Gillies, a man of many talents, presents us with the woodblock prints that he has fashioned with furious intent over the past year.
With a range of influences, Gillies uses the medium in and on his own terms - whether that be on skateboards, traditional maple or printed on paper. In Against the Grain, he will be showing the wood that's been carved as well as the paper that came afterwards; the journey being more immediate than the destination. It's like that imagined meeting between Hokusai, Käthe Kollwitz and Diego Rivera at a Utah Phillips or Boris show, immense narrative and quiet integrity.
It's not all about the magic of the medium though. The content contained within the images is a poetic "f*ck you" to the incessant drone of technology and gratitude for the small things that make life worth living. The lethal weapon in a dying machine. The fire that made the damper. So don your Fridays' best, head on up the stairs to Nine Lives and catch something made with heart and with smarts.

FourThousand is a subcultural guide to Brisbane, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Brisbane writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FourThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
