So you hear the words United Arab Emirates and you think of glitzy buildings in the ocean or extreme market capitalism. But underneath all that smooth shiny exterior lays the belly of the beast, where capitalism is probably synonymous with a Lord of the Flies kind of cannibalism. The UAE's were known as the Pirate Coast not long ago, so of course there's still something a little darker going on under the Gulf. The ARC Biennial presents Across the Gulf where 22 artists from the region will tell us where it's all at.

Focusing on painting and photomedia, artists will foray into the reality of life in the UAE, instead of just new Guggenheims and black gold ambitions. The exhibition venue alone is also well worth checking out, before old man Newman develops the Howard Smith Wharves - parallel reality? Quite relevant, being that Abu Dhabi is a sister city of ours.
