What does it mean to be told your face is ‘interesting’? Is it a badly executed compliment, or a thinly disguised insult?
Melbourne photographer Simon Obarzanek has photographed hundreds of anonymous interesting faces that intrigue him. Captured on film in a detached, unsentimental kind of way, Obarzanek cares little about the personalities or identities of the people he photographs, caring only for the structures and physical attributes on his subject’s faces.
First impressions could conclude that this would lead to the photographs revealing less, but somehow that sense of anonymity in a single black and white print ends up revealing more spirit than the average collection of hundreds of photographs on Facebook.
