Where their EP showcased an off-the-cuff looseness and a near-enough-is-good-enough attitude, Songs' self-titled debut album is a study in (relative) discipline, with thoroughly explored song structures and deftly crafted soundscapes.
These are songs that have been broken down and rebuilt numerous times.
This split 7" features greatly influential New Zealand band The Bats (who've released over 20 recordings and been kicking around long before most of you were born) and Sydney based foursome, Songs. The Bats offer two new tracks; one an excerpt from their new album The Guilty Office and the other, an unreleased track from the same recording.
Describing music is, almost inevitably, a frustrating series of inadequate analogies. In the case of Songs, my grey matter latched onto the following: Punk lilt and guitar-driven melodies that recall Is This It-era Strokes. Vocals that channel a stripped-back Velvet Underground; driving rhythms that might have been picked up off the floor after The Wrens finished The Meadlowlands; Constrained, Stooges-like brevity in afour-track EP.
