Nothing beats a Polaroid. Its nostalgic feel, its play of light, its instant development: there are many reasons to be a fan of this classic form of image-making. Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and 2008 is Polaroid's last year. This may not be surprising in our era of ever-advancing digital photography, but it still sure is sad.
In the past, Brisbanites have been considered somewhat behind the eight ball in terms of fashion (for proof, check out photos of your parents circa Expo 88). But things have changed. Description: You'd think that humans would be bored of photography by now. But they're not. They just seem to want more and more all the time. Which is why it's really weird that no humans ever print out their photographs anymore. It's also why everyone should head off to the Queensland College of Art SNAP Selling Exhibition this Friday night.

If there was an Opulent Bible, it would be a compiled back-catalogue of The Fader magazine, and we would refer to it as "The Good Book of All That is Good". The Fader falls into the realm of a music-culture-lifestyle magazine, but with a marked difference. Rather than waiting for an artist to get discovered or a fashion label to break, they go out and find them.
We feel pretty dubious about all this hipster anthropology shit, but this book has some serious credentials. Photographer Peter Beste apparently spent eight years getting unrivaled access to the most insular and hostile music scene in the world: True Norwegian Black Metal. Think Burzum. Emperor.
Novels of drug-fuelled desperation in West End; songs of subtropical heartbreak, or that inevitable poem referencing the Brisbane River. You have to admit that the essence of Brisbane has been captured about three million times, thanks to the efforts of this city’s prolific creative writers, painters, poets and musicians.
