In 2008, Western Australia's Mark McPherson magically transformed his small B&W photo zine into a full-color coffee table book (and accompanying international exhibition) - with its charm and beauty still intact. ACP director Alasdair Foster even called Hijacked 1, "the most important photographic book that's come out of Australia in at least five years".
If Spike Jonze was a girl, he'd be one of those cute girls that the geek guy is secretly in love with - the girl that is worth coming up with cute games for, like loyalty cards for ping pong games, or re-enacting childhood experiences through a veil of 90s music on cassette. His new short film, I'm Here, premiered on the internet earlier this year, and is available to watch for free here.
Keeping an eye on the cool kids is much easier when they're all sitting at the same table having dinner and you find that chink in the wall and try to go for a quick peek.
That's where TOURIST Magazine come in; this isn't a looky-lu into some fashionista's daily shoe choices, but moreso a view into the better things.
Joseph Szabo is responsible for one of the most memorable images of the 90s, used to great effect on the cover of Dinosaur Jr.'s Green Mind album. Aside from the disturbing fact it's of a kid smoking, the shot has that removed-but-right-in-the-middle-of-things feel that an entire movement of photographers are trying too hard to pull off to this day.
An important milestone in growing up has definitely gotta be the moment you realise the difference between what your oldies want you to do and what you want you to do. You learn quickly that sometimes, the old bags know what they're talking about (remember when your mum forbid you from shaving your legs so you went to the cutlery draw instead and make did with a bread knife?) and other times, they just don't get it.
To be honest, the world needs another arty photography magazine featuring naked/semi naked people tramping around remote forests like it does a '90s ska punk revival. What makes Waterfall stand out from the racks of heavy stock tomes of style is the quality of photography.
The theme for the latest joint Taipei/London production is 'Rooms' and features contributions from the likes of Jennilee Marigomen, Peter Puklus and Virginia del Rio capturing their own and others space/zone/'time out area'.
