Ryan McPhun is a musical Krishna; the multi-talented operator behind The Ruby Suns has a new album out on Sub-Pop called Fight Softly. With an almost entirely new sonic palette compared to that of 2008's lush Sea Lion, the Sun's new album represents a trip out into sparse synth land. I spoke to Ryan during my lunch break.
Dick Diver sound like underground 80s Australia. Arks Up recalls the best parts of the Hunters & Collectors discography: the songs gather around raw, trudging bass lines that sound best filling the pungent, carpeted rooms of Brunswick pubs.
With clever, multi-member pop songwriting, The Go-Betweens also come to mind: the accents not dropped but accentuated; the guitar work sharp, tonal, puncturing.

Here We Go Magic is Brooklyn denizen Luke Temple's new band.
If the pages of Handmade Nation the book are anything to go by, the world of artists and crafters sure is an intriguing one. Their stories, their studios, their curious creations. It's all a wonderfully tangled colourful web of creativity and counter-culture and grassroots community. An exploration of how handmade knitted tea cosies say f-you to the man.
Strong and at times unique vocals backed with solid musicianship and relatively catchy tunes make Parc Avenue a worthy contender for late end-of-year top album lists or to help kick off this year's list alongside Animal Collective and Antony & The Johnsons (depending on how you interpret this album's release date).
