GoMA really is the best thing to happen in Brisbane, culturally, since Lord Mayor Jim Soorley left the office. If you’re looking for a gift or simply rewarding yourself for having never voted for ol’ mate Jim in the first place, then the Gallery Store Modern is the place to find all your culturally explicit novelty and educational resources.
A famous architect once said: "architecture is the highest form of art." Clearly modesty was left at the drawing board in this case, but that's no reason to dismiss those for whom it goes hand in hand with talent.
As a change from its regular preference for artist's collections, this month GoMA is getting its arch-nerd on and bringing us Place Makers: a celebration of Queensland architecture over the last 15 years, and the largest exhibition of contemporary architecture ever staged in an Australian art museum.
In case you missed the Alibi Room launch party last Friday (think costumes, chaos and a whole lot of cocktails) do not despair: the quirky mag that leant its name to the event – Duke – is still yours to purchase! For the uninitiated, Duke is a decidedly tongue-in-cheek pop culture, fashion and arts magazine.
Anyone with half an interest in art has heard of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. But who knew that it was once called the Museum of Non-Objective Painting? It’s a shame it ever changed. Fare thee well, Mr. Warhol. You have brought much to this city during your stay. Alas, the show has entered its final week and as part of the second-last Up Late, organisers have secured the services of Architecture In Helsinki in DJ mode to begin to wrap up the event with the fitting farewell it so rightly deserves.

Back in the early days of Disney—before the hand of God would have had just cause to smite the company executives for committing idolatry—Walt also had a series of animated shorts that didn’t include iconic characters at all. Silly Symphonies, as they were dubbed, were reworks of classic tales and nursery rhymes set to a range of musical compositions.
