The New York Review of Books desribes Sam Lipsyte as the "poet laureate of overeducated American loserdom". The NYRB rarely gets it wrong and with Milo Burke, the 39-year-old narrator in his latest cackfest The Ask, Lipsyte has found a pathecially fine self loather.
A cynical and unhappily married internet porn consessiour, Burke works "a good shitty job" at 'Medicore University' raising money to fund the arts program.
Havana is a slum, no matter what people say. If you think it's all dancing and beautiful food, Jesus Christ, you've been misinformed. It's a vile city, with plenty of poverty, rum and counterfeit cigars, and to walk away loving such a horrible place is something I put down to the writing of Ernest Hemingway and that sickly Cuban fisherman.
Now, I won't profess to be a Leonard Cohen aficionado. But I do know that he is Montreal's premiere export, second only to William Shatner (who has a building named after him at McGill University).
So, anyway, in 1963, Cohen wrote a novel. The Favourite Game reads like Salinger with more sex and follows the early life of Larry Breavman, a precocious upstart who publishes his first book while still in college.

FourThousand is a subcultural guide to Brisbane, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Brisbane writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FourThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
