OUR FAMILY: TWOTHOUSAND [SYDNEY] THREETHOUSAND [MELBOURNE] FOURTHOUSAND [BRISBANE] FIVETHOUSAND [ADELAIDE] SIXTHOUSAND [PERTH]

Thursday 18th June

The Outpost is a brave store willing to try anything once. You know, electric Blue Lemonade, Keirin racing, going to art shows where you could get stabbed on the way home AND being our guest editors this week! This issue is all in the good name of skating and particularly The Outpost's 5th annual I Used To Skate Once' exhibition. They've also thrown in a clever collection of things you oughta know about: hair products that'll keep you staying alive, what split 7" record to listen to on sunny afternoons, the sweetest guitars and finding the perfect Happy Ending.
Thanks Matt & Thea.

FourThousand 099 - skate once?

P.S. We're on Twitter, are you? If you got 'unfollowed' by us this week it's because we're starting over. It's nothing personal. Stay on the twitter line for some ridiculously clever tweets from us.

New Zealand must be good for the photographic genes with the likes of Derek Henderson and Max Doyle. Also of NZ origins, the now Sydney based Mr Rene Vaile has built up a rapid reputation for his thoughtful images. Vaile has shot for amazing publications including Vogue, i-D, Dazed and Confused, Tokion and Mountain Fold. His music clients include Architecture in Helsinki, Songs, Beaches and he has also shot fashion for emerging Australian designer Arndsdorf. This black and white zine published by Izrock is a compilation of photos from life, love, nature, skateboarding and everything in between. Basically, Rene has the gift of making those seemingly mundane things look strangely beautiful.

This split 7" features greatly influential New Zealand band The Bats (who've released over 20 recordings and been kicking around long before most of you were born) and Sydney based foursome, Songs. The Bats offer two new tracks; one an excerpt from their new album The Guilty Office and the other, an unreleased track from the same recording. As for Songs, who (btw) recently supported Deerhunter, they bring us an acoustic version of ‘Keeping It Clean' from their debut self titled EP and a new track called ‘My Number'.

This record is truly a keepsake union of two great bands of our time. Put this record on, make yourself a g&t and find a balcony with a good view and a nice patch of sun. Put your feet up and let the rays reflect off your shades. You never felt so at ease.

Oh and here's a tid-bit for you; the record cover photo is by Songs member and internationally respected photographer Max Doyle.

It's that time of year again; when The Zoo opens its doors, considering itself careless, fancy free, and invites y'all in to break a sweat, kick the jams, and check out I Used To Skate Once 5

Put on by the wonderful people from The Outpost 'skate once' has become somewhat of a Brisbane institution, with each show becoming even more packed to the rafters and the artist list becoming bigger and better every time.

This year I Used To Skate Once is hosting the artwork of 56 artists, including Brett Chan, French, Stefan Marx, Elana Mullaly, Mark Drew, Jesse Olsen, Carmela Ruffino, and a whole swagger of even more local talent; this years installment is sure to be a killer. It'll be like walking into Waking Life, though with a little less of Ethan Hawke post-Reality Bites, and probably not as full of rambling dialogue. Not only do you have all those amazing decks to hang your eyes from, but Kirin.J.Callinan, Secret Birds, Stemford Hiss and Doom Doom will be sating any aural desires you may have on the night. Don't be shy and head up to The Zoo next thursday night to taste Brisbane's own version of Beautiful Losers

We're all going to die and everyone we know is going to die, too. It's useless to pretend otherwise, and why the long face? Death is funny haha and funny interesting, just like the rest of life. And who knows, it might be just around the corner, especially if you make a habit of attending exhibitions in Fortitude Valley. You might get stabbed on your way home!

The amazing southern conglomerate of Joseph Allen (Izrock), Webuyourkids, Sam Morgan (Bloglips) and Max Olijnyk (Note to Self) are ok with it. Are you?

Have you ever lost your hairdresser? You know the panic; you have turned up to the salon and they aren't there anymore. For God's sake, this is the only person you will trust with your locks - what the hell are you going to do?! That is why we have to tell you of the whereabouts of Lisa Guardala (stylist) and Monique White (colourist) who have recently moved to this chic new salon in New Farm.

The salon aesthetic is simple and modern and the girls use delicious styling products by Australian label Kevin Murphy (highly sought after for his Paraben and Sulphate free elixirs and suitably their clever titles such as 'Angel Wash', 'Born Again' and 'Staying Alive').

Based on JM Coetzee's Booker Prize-winning novel, Disgrace is set in a post-apartheid South Africa that's renegotiating privilege and power. With a striking juxtaposition of brutally beautiful landscapes and plush, paranoid cities, it's the perfect backdrop for a provocative meditation on race, class, sex and violence.

When poetry professor David Lurie (John Malkovich) is kicked out of his university for a callous affair with a student (Antoinette Engel), he retreats to his grown-up daughter Lucy's remote farm. Lucy's market garden business relies on the protection and financial assistance of black farmhand Petrus (Eriq Ebouaney), and when father and daughter are brutally attacked by black youths, Lurie's racist anger at Petrus threatens to destroy Lucy's precarious existence.

The film resists the temptation to paint Lurie as a sympathetic figure. He's a self-absorbed aesthete and sexual predator with no compunction or social skills, which highlights the hypocrisy of his outrage. Still, the perfectly cast Malkovich makes Lurie intriguing. Newcomer Jessica Haines is fantastic as Lucy. The decisions she makes aren't easy to understand and feel like capitulations, but Haines's toughness suggests Lucy will weather life's storms far better than her father.

This place is like a mecca for every local and visiting muso. Brisbane doesn't realise how lucky it is to have a guitar store of this calibre. I personally have seen guitar heroes including Tim Rogers, Brad Shepherd and Robert Forster to name a few, lurking in Tym's and eyeing off his strings. Tym's is an independent guitar shop with an extensive range of vintage to affordable second hand guitars, amps and effects pedals. They also do guitar repair and restoration. Tym's motto is "if it's broken or not playing like it should, we'll fix it."

He also does a range of custom made Mosrite guitars, and you can get all your effect needs in house too with Brisbane's biggest range of new boutique and hard to get pedals. You need a Big Muff? A Human Fly? - Tym's got you sorted. Amps, valves, transformers? You know where to go...

Do you like to support the little people? You know, the families that broke this country's back? The Crows Nest company is a family owned business which started way back in 1903, being one of Australia's oldest surviving soft drink manufacturers. Crows Nest is a small town in the Darling Downs region of Queensland.

These thirst quenchers are all bottled in glass ensuring untainted flavours. They contain no preservatives and the recipes have barely changed in 50 years - amazing. The vintage style flavours include Raspberry, Creaming Soda, Double Sars and the popular (electric) Blue Lemonade.

Now, there really aren't too many reasons for you to visit Ipswich, unless you're really into trains or you're after an ‘International Sports Bar' experience like no other?

If it's not for either of those reasons, it's likely you want to practice your Keirin racing at the Limestone Park Velodrome. If you're a track bike freak, here's a great excuse to get out of Brisbane for the day. The velodrome is in a public space, so is free to use. No brakes required. Lycra optional.
