Thursday 31st July

We're not late, we just like keeping you on your toes / paws. After much scientific testing and burrito eating... it has been decided that Thursday mornings are your favourite time to receive this little bundle of joy. So here we are. We people are weird and wonderful aren’t we? We go around spending our days making strange and amazing things to decorate ourselves with, listen to, live in and wallpaper our streets with. Then we go throw festivals, parties and big sales all in the name of them. It’s not crazy, it’s just what we do. I still think this week’s covershot sums up the lengths we go to for something we love, even if it means glitter-ising blue cheese.

Is Not Magazine. A magazine. A poster. In their hometown, Melbourne, they are know for insane parties. Internationally they are lauded for original, prize-winning design: it confused the hell out of passers by. It fostered local artists and writers. Many a parent of Is Not contributors could proudly say "Well, at least my child has stopped burning hedges."

Having reclaimed public space since 2005, Is Not Magazine is closing its walls. The perishables have been trashed. The self-destruct sequence has been set. All the rugs have been sold. The kid is going home and taking his ball with him. In one final display of plumage.

Is Not Magazine's three-year elbowing for public wall space showed that subversion could be free, funny, inspiring, artistic and typographically beautiful. They did it all for you. They also did it for free donuts. Stand and stare once more at this non advertising. Be sold one last time.

The problem with so much jazz and electronic music is its dry, cerebral nature. Translation: it could use a nice big pair of old-fashioned balls.

Aussie trio Pivot's sophomore release O Soundtrack My Heart (their first for hugely influential UK label Warp) has all the smarts of a chemistry professor, yet still swings big balls like a longshoreman. A constantly evolving and ever-surprising mash-up of jazz-influenced, groove-heavy instrumental indie-rock, its like a video game version of a turf war between Trans Am, Battles, Ratatat, and Tortoise. Does that description sound good? You should hear the album.

A famous architect once said: "architecture is the highest form of art." Clearly modesty was left at the drawing board in this case, but that's no reason to dismiss those for whom it goes hand in hand with talent.

As a change from its regular preference for artist's collections, this month GoMA is getting its arch-nerd on and bringing us Place Makers: a celebration of Queensland architecture over the last 15 years, and the largest exhibition of contemporary architecture ever staged in an Australian art museum.

The exhibition will feature scaled model-replicas of the state's leading architectural designs (incredible in their complexity, and better than any damn dollhouse you've ever seen); as well as sketches, photographs, animations, documentaries and time-lapse camera-reels all exploring and celebrating the idea of 'place'.

The models are fascinating in and of themselves: tiny, intricate and perfectly detailed, with impeccable craftsmanship by a team of UQ architecture students. All in all, Place Makers promises to be the underground exhibition of the year.

It's not art, it's arch: but best of all, it's FREE.

Tom Cochraine knew what life was about and to a lesser extent so did Ace of Base, and arguably so did Morrissey but probably not this guy.

As reassuring as it may seem to tell yourself ‘Life is a highway I want to ride it all night long' sometimes it doesn't hurt to engage in a slightly deeper dialogue about life and the human condition. Going to see a movie is a good place to start - especially if you don't waste your money on a crappy film and head off instead to see a gorgeous Swedish film composed of self-contained vignettes, each shot in a single take, which describe the frustrations, absurdities, and sadness of the human condition.

You, the Living' screening exclusively this weekend for Brisbane International Film Festival, is a film about humankind, its greatness and its baseness, joy and sorrow, its self-confidence and anxiety, its desire to love and be loved. Almost the entire film was shot in director Roy Andersson's purpose-built studio in Sweden, where he used an ensemble of ordinary-looking non-actors found in everyday locations. Everyday, ordinary, living human beings. Cool hey?

Original men's fashion designers are hard to come by in Brisbane, with most local talents favouring the arena of women's fashion and accessories. Understandably, we were both excited and relieved to discover friendly local duo Dave and Holly and their freshly-born brand thatwasyesterday.

The duo bring us a range of affordable, edgy streetwear for men; right now focusing on a collection of creative print tees, vests and jumpers that look and feel three times as expensive as they actually are (the quality fabrics used undoubtedly lend a hand here).

Women can rest assured the brand caters to both sexes, with a smattering of singlets, dresses, skirts and tops in a myriad of interesting shapes and patterns. Catch them at the Valley Markets Saturday, Southbank Markets all weekend, or browse and buy at their online store.

El Torito is so charming it makes the sun itself smile. When just walking along Boundary Street, you wouldn't even realise it was a restaurant - (if not for the chalk board proclaiming it's lunch specials).

It was these very lunch specials that drew me in... “$9.95 for a burrito/chimichanga/enchilada and a fanta/coke/diet coke/sprite” I said, “That's pee-pants sick.” The inside was completely empty but the wall hangings were really very interesting to gaze at mid-burrito (hot tip on the burrito btw - they're delicious).

I just really can't understand why the place was empty. Maybe it rocks out at night-time and I am just uninformed of sweet-cheap-Mexican-restaurants before now, but gee whiz get in at lunch time, it's top notch.

‘Presentation Evening' That's what my school called its award ceremony. It was kind of novel ‘cause if you were smart and/or sporty (in my case both) then you got to have a day off school, go to the practise and watch everyone pretend-accept awards, all whilst eating lots of junk food like it was entertainment or something. By the time the real deal came, the sugar highs had worn off, you were shit-scared of tripping over on stage and everyone was sick of shaking the gangly Principals hand or some old biddy that had donated a lot of dosh to the school.

Well those days are over - now it's all about red carpets and winning big bucks! The Queensland New Filmmakers Awards (yep, that stands for QNFA) are presented by Warner Roadshow Studios and over the last 20 years, judges have viewed over 2000 films and presented over 250 awards of excellence, with a prize pool totalling almost $300 000 (plus atleast a kiddies pool worth of bubbly).

In the past winners from these awards have gone onto be showcased at Cannes and the Berlin Film Festivals. So if you want to check out some of the contestants / competition and/or you actually really enjoyed ‘Presentation Night' then you'll love the Awards Ceremony too. Plus, there's a licensed bar instead of a coke machine.

With the release of their debut album Elephant Shell earlier this year, Canadian pop-rockers Tokyo Police Club hit Australia for a run of shows revolving around their Splendour In The Grass appearance. Their shimmering guitar pop has drawn comparisons to a few notable acts, but their sound is still unique and fresh enough to our ears, and it doesn’t reek of rip-off-ish-ness (yes… rip-off-ish-ness). MSTRKRFT: they’re all about acronyms, remixes, mash-ups, re-re-mixes and having a good time I suppose. Aren’t we all? JFK (Jessie F. Keeler) formerly Death from Above 1979 and AI-P (Alex Puodziukas) formerly of the Mississauga electropop group Girlsareshort (according to Wikipedia). Anyhoo, AI-P produced Death from Above 1979's second album and several of JFK’s other projects. Eventually, they must have realised they could make some sexy tunes together as MSTRKRFT. Since then they have brought out an LP, an album and four singles. They have also remixed all your favourite bands from Norwegian pop-electro princess Annie to The Kills and even our very own Wolfmother and KM (Kylie Minogue). They are doing Splendour this weekend, (which will be stupidly-cold)…

BUT if you're not going to Spelndour here's your chance to get warm with MSTRKRFT in Brisvegas this weekend: thanks to the lovely men over at Ten Pound Crew, we’ve got 5 double passes to give away for the show at the Arena this Saturday night!

To win, just answer the following question.

This week's question: What does the acronym ‘PFY’ stand for?

a)Pimply Faced Youth

b)Post French Yoghurt

c)Pain From Yoga

d)Pre Friday Yearn
