Wednesday 23rd July
Despite all the new gadgets and shiny things professing to make our lives easier, healthier and sexier - we still need to hang out the washing from the time to time and harder still - find somewhere to put it. Not everyone has a backyard or even a Hills Hoist for that matter. It might be a little scary, but might I also add that daggy clothes are one of the simplest pleasures in life, if only we could wear long johns – everywhere? OK, no, you’re right fashion still wins out over long johns. But what I’m (trying) to get at is that simple things still do the job and some have even become novel like mixtapes and film cameras. Maybe I’m just crazy like my mother, but I do sometimes find the whole hanging out the washing thing a little therapeutic.

In case you missed the Alibi Room launch party last Friday (think costumes, chaos and a whole lot of cocktails) do not despair: the quirky mag that leant its name to the event – Duke – is still yours to purchase! For the uninitiated, Duke is a decidedly tongue-in-cheek pop culture, fashion and arts magazine. Its chic-meets-street approach includes a variety of celeb spoofs, cheeky articles and fake ads, and – yes ladies - even boasts its own scantily-clad male centrefold every issue.
We won't give too much away about issue quatro (4) except to say you may be pleasantly surprised by the uniquely-sexy combination of faux leopard fur and neon nail polish. The good news is, unlike your other mags, Duke is still so underground its copies can be well and truly considered collectibles. You'll be the coolest kid on the bus for sure.
Pick up this tasty little morsel of subversive pop culture at The Outpost or GoMA Store.

Is this a grammatical response to No Age’s Nouns? In it’s most simplistic format, an album is really quite similar to a word… it comprises of smaller parts (i.e. songs are individual letters) which together as a whole form a means of communication which can be seen, heard and felt.
So what sort of word is Verbs overall? Active? Passive? The truth is, it’s somewhere in between. It’s a kind of genre-bending trip into a euphoric psyche of tone and noise, except with a more commanding sound than its linguistic counterpart – it does represent active prose after all and doesn’t just act as a naming convention.
The opening strains and chants of All My Friends establish the record from the outset as a true psychedelic affair, laced with tribal-esque refrains and mix-n-match samples. Throughout the record, the resonance peters in and out like a tide of sound, at times bounding in exuberance, at others waning in introspect. It seems the whole ambient trip music can take you on is, dare I say it, “in” at the moment.
Indeed, Verbs is much like an English lesson – to some an eye-opening experience of sensory transmission, and to others slow and boring, but overall still quite necessary for most. We recommend you attend and try to learn something from it – you’ll probably still never amount to anything though.

There’s been so many art spaces opening in Brisbane lately and with every new art exhibition comes another conversation about whether our city is actually ready for this much art. The answer we’d like to offer is YES. There’s no reason why people should get freaked out by the idea of going to more art shows than music shows or games of football.
The newest space in town has been claimed by Boxcopy on the top floor of Metro Arts. They’re celebrating with the exhibition ‘Loseless' – a group show of new work by local and interstate artists who employ the digital video medium in their practice. Apparently the term ‘Lossless’ refers to a type of data compression that retains the exact original data instead of achieving an approximation. Maybe that means these artists are more about displaying a disregard or sense of indifference about video art rather than trying to be ‘perfect.’ It’s so tedious to be perfect, it’s heaps more brilliant to be lossless.

We all know suburban shopping can be a fruitless endeavour at times. Wallflower Suite, in the forgotten end of Paddington, is one of the few stores that make hitting the pavement worthwhile. They offer brands familiar enough to be comfortable yet quirky enough to be original, such as True Religion jeans, Ben Sherman, DDP, Melinda and Narnia, Scotch and Soda and Preacher.
The often-looked-over lads have plenty to choose from here, including an impressively large collection of dress shirts, jeans and funky hats. Wallflower Suite is also home to a huge range of accessories and tidbits, from panties to piggybanks. The works of local artists and jewellery designers lend a hand in creating a luxe, welcoming aesthetic. Forget tall poppies, this wallflower is more than welcome at my next party.
Psst, they've also embraced the winter sales with 50% off almost all clothing!

American Teen premiere for Brisbane International Film Festival

The Regent Cinema 3, 167 Queen Street Mall
When:
Mon Aug 4, 7pm
How much:

If you’ve seen one American teenage film you’ve seen them all. While it’s obviously testing for us as cinemagoers to watch the same old sex, drugs, drama and insecurity that plays out in these high-school sitcoms, imagine how hard it is for film-makers and directors still interested in cinematic explorations of this treacherous and fascinating period of life?
Instead of making another ‘American Pie’ or ‘Mean Girls’ or ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ director Nanette Burstein thankfully decided to work with something a lot more fascinating – actual real high school students from American’s actual Midwest. Yes, the aptly titled ‘American Teen’ is a documentary.
She charts a year in the lives of four real high school students struggling with the usual teenage pressures, from acne, to sex, drugs, career paths and social cliques. This ain’t gonna remind you of The OC or Laguna Beach, because that shit ain’t real. This is going to remind you of your own high school experience – completely uncensored and unforgettable.

Welcome Powershovel, the Japanese camera brand that has created, fact: the first 110mm fish-eye lens camera: ‘demekin’ – dang it’s so cute and small! It fits right in your pocket. The ethos of Powershovel is to use the camera not as a precise machine but more as a sketchbook of everyday life… and boy can it be fun!
Our fav is the SFX Maker camera – you can give yourself the head of your favourite pet without the need for any photoshop business, the camera allows you to split the shot – aka dog head on human body or you could turn it sideways and have two photos of you talking to yourself or something very creepy-carnival-esque like that. It’s hyper-reality and it could be in your hands…
There’s also the Pop Art Maker, a four sequence camera with four different colour lenses, it turns everything into pop art! Check out the mystery of the book camera; the silly fun of the hampster camera.
At such an affordable price they’re definitely worth checking out. To make things even easier, VG and TO are also stocking the 110mm film. There’s a Terry/Cobrasnake/last-night's-party inside us all… so get snapping!

Has the world gone foodie-mad? Everyone wants to be the next Jamie Oliver/Nigella Lawson or Gordon ‘the f word’ Ramsey (p.s Ramsey you’re not hot and you need to wash your mouth out). If you do get-off on Ramsey and the rest of them - then this is the movie for you, you cockney loving swine.
The movie: enter Jésus Almagro (wait - sorry, not cockney) winner of Spain’s top cooking award, he decides to take on the chefs of the world by competing for the prestigious Bocuse d’Or in Lyon (France). Bigger than a triple-le-cheese-burger, this is the Olympics of food. The film is a documentary about the months of trial and error as Jésus attempts to perfect three dishes using the nominated ingredients: Norwegian halibut, French chicken from Bresse, and Norwegian royal crab.
On the big day the challenge is to prepare two dishes from scratch in five hours in unfamiliar surrounds and in front of a boisterous crowd. Dubbed as ‘gastronomic thriller’ this doco will have you jumping out of your seats and licking your lips faster than Gordon Ramsey can say the f word (wanker).

I still remember when I met my first Goths, I was about 16, which I think is surprisingly old. I kind of liked them, I mean they liked The Cure as well and they were more intelligent and had more interesting things to say than the surfer kids or the collection of skinny white guys who were really into hotting up their cars. But there never seemed to be that many around back then, sure you'd occasionally see some guy inexplicably wearing a black trench coat in the middle of summer but there was nothing like the hordes of kids outside Queen St Mall Hungry Jack's you get these days.
Let's face it there's a Goth revival going on, just like the 12th century, Goth is mainstream again. So get amongst it, UQ Art Museum is hosting a exhibition taking a peek into the noir underbelly of Australian culture as something decidedly dark manifests across art, fashion, film and literature.
Check it out - it's totally 'nu-grave' (now if only they made fluoro sweatbands in black...)

Where have these guys been?! Who knows, but all we know is that they’re back with their 10” EP launch this weekend. Their age has risen (surprise, much?), and with this physical maturity there has been a supplementary maturity in sound – their music much tighter and more polished than before. After seemingly playing just about everywhere everyday a year or two back, Tragic/Athletic dropped off the radar for quite a while, and this launch hopefully represents a permanent return to the scene for these talented (older) kids. Should be a riot. Literally. - SM

Anjelique Houtkamp is the Sailor Jerry of our time - only better looking, Dutch and female. Her nautical themes run as deep as ol’ Jerry’s with swallows, snakes, daggers, skulls, pirates, mermaids, broken hearts and busty pin up girls all prominent. Houtkamp’s spin on the classics is to combine them with the lesser-known mythology of Eastern Europe and an eerie beauty.
Her recently released book Tattoo Darling is a perfect companion for those looking for fresh ink, as it is for those who’ll just marvel at the clean lines in the safety of their living rooms. In any event, we’ve got a copy of Anjelique’s book to giveaway, which depending on your outlook, could save you a tattoo trip to Amsterdam.
To win, just answer the following question.
This week's question: What’s the best thing you shouldn’t do in Amsterdam?
a)Visit the red light district
b)Linger in a café for too long
c)Eat that cookie
