How much:
$5 for the zine
My best friend just made this zine so I guess it isn't my place to tell you that it's a fascinating, insightful and ridiculously amazing read. BUT - I think it's OK if I tell you what it's about and then you can make up your own mind.
Disco Rough is a collection of interviews with some guys that were in a bunch of seminal German new wave bands in the early eighties. It's centred around ZickZack, the label on which they were released and the guy that signed them - Alfred Hilsberg. It also features the first English translation of the 1979 article where Hilsberg first coined the phrase ‘German New Wave'.
While I was the copy editor, I take no responsibility for the spelling mistake on page 43. Sam put that bit in without checking with me first.

Lightning Bolt are a juggernaut. They are two men. Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson. They play and they play and they play faster and they play faster and they play more and faster and more faster. Limbs, masks, and the floor, and the people crushing in, and Halloween. It's like it's Halloween. And then there's the noise, which is the music, and it hits you and you keep going and they keep going. Keep breathing.
Douglas Lance Gibson: Do you guys still record every practice session to 4-track?
Brian Chippendale: Yeah, we record everything. I do all the recording and I still do it onto the cassette 4-track that I have. Actually two of the songs on the latest album are from [recordings off] the 4-track.
DLG: You've done that in the past as well, included home recorded tracks alongside stuff recorded in the studio.
BC: Yeah, we haven't done that in a while. Our first album had some of that stuff, then I've done solo stuff where I've recorded that way, and then, finally, for the new Lightning Bolt we put a few on there. It's the same old story where the demos sounded better than when we recorded them again. The demos just had this sort of magic to them. I think that the 4-track sounded amazing, so I was pushing to get this stuff on there... read the rest here!

Art school dropout? Not this time. Not with this bunch. Yup, it's that time of year again, where student's throw up their hands in hallelujah like motions and scream some indecipherable mumbo jumbo about "where am I going to get with this god-damned arts degree" while an academic in the corner promises the world to those dedicated enough. Mmmmm.
Queensland College of Art are hosting a slew of Grad shows that have already begun. Fine Art and Contemporary Indigenous Art offer sculpture, painting, prints, and jewellery. Photography ranges from commercial to conceptual. The real clincher though, is the Gas Award, held in the Dell Gallery over the uni holidays. Including the works of James Watts, Yuki Sakamoto, Nat Koyama, Ryan Presley, Alex Cuffe, and more. Get your art smock on and join in the festivities over the next couple of months!

The Versus Show is back for it's third (the charm) season. The two artists that have hitched their wagon to this shining star are the spark worthy Rob Scott and Nick Hornum. Bring on the fireworks we say.
The ‘versus' concept was spawned over a year ago by artist Mel Baxter (curator Curvy, Hand Drawn, New York Buck). We got to gabbing with Mel B...
Us: What exactly is a ‘versus show'
Mel B: A versus show is the love child of two artists' mutual admiration and creative collaboration; mixed in with a whole bunch of live art, video installations, sculpture, and live music.
Us: Can we expect something different from this show?
Mel B: The Versus Show II brought you skateboarding in the carpark, decks and photography in the gallery and plenty of tunes and beverages to keep you well out of harms way from the hum drum and the drunken metro brawlers of the valley. The Versus Show III promises the same bundle of visual and auditory fun -but with some home improvement...

Those who frequent Brunswick Street would no doubt have noticed a new shop-front pop up. Boys breathe a sigh of relief, this store has one intention only, and that is to please you. Welcome to the block, Angus Black, a butcher shop in it's ‘hey day', and now the latest addition to fall under the Natalie Denning umbrella.
The relatively large, sterile-like space cleverly emulates that of a butcher, as the store is aptly named after. As the story goes Angus Black was born in 1909, the son of the greatest butcher in all of the land. From a young age he was taught the importance of a quality cut and like the butcher himself, Angus Black stocks the ‘finest cuts from across the Australian landscape' all at an affordable price.
Expect to find cult Melbourne street-wear label Alpha 60 alongside the likes of April 77, Gram, Fortunes Fool, Das Monk, Black Noise White Rain, Vanishing Elephant and Henson.
Rare and well done, Angus Black has a beefy yet selective choice of stock set to impress the most discerning of male shoppers.

Joel and Ethan Coen's latest film is an absolute winner. Surreal, richly allusive and cruelly hilarious, it narrates a decent man's struggle to reason his way out of a maze of absurd injustice.
Minneapolis, 1967, and physics professor Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) is stressing about making tenure amid an anonymous whispering campaign against him and a possible attempt to bribe him. His no-good brother Arthur (Richard Kind) won't move off his couch, his bratty kids treat him with indifference, and in the ultimate indignity, his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) wants a divorce. She's taken up with the truly revolting Sy Ableman (a deliciously unctuous performance from Fred Melamed), who somehow has the local Jewish community convinced that he's a mensch - a serious man.
A wealth of detail in this film gestures towards our need to make sense of things: Heisenberg's uncertainty principle; Arthur's epic probability project, the Mentaculus; a rabbi's rambling parable about teeth; the Jefferson Airplane lyric "When the truth turns out to be lies..." From the cryptic Yiddish prologue to the ominous ending, A Serious Man offers viewers as little solace as Larry. But like him, I couldn't help pondering what it all means.

With the death of the polaroid ominous and little Kmart 1-hour photos labs closing down all over the nation, it's hard to get a ‘to have and to hold' happy snap these days. Sure we have digital! But when was the last time you got those 300 MySpace profile perfect picture shots printed on real photographic paper instead of your canon bubble-jet? And you can forget the element of surprise! Digital is for frauds! OK, so maybe that's a little too outrageous coming from an online publication.

According to a column in The New Yorker circa 1942 some retired Wall Street stock broker by the name Lemuel Benedict coined the origin of the eggs benny. Benedict wandered into the Waldorf Hotel one particularly hungover 1894 morning in hope of finding a cure for his distressed liver. He ordered buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon and a side of hollandaise. The Waldorf maitre d' was so impressed he put it on the menu substituting bacon for ham and toast for an English muffin.
If you want to read more about the becoming benedict squabbles, there's plenty of controversy. For all intents and purposes, as far as I'm concerned, the chef at Lure invented eggs benedict. Come join me in my blissful ignorance, you too will never believe there's better a hollandaise, a better off-the-bone ham, better fresh rocket (yes rocket instead of spinach), a better sour dough base or better poached egg this side of the milky way.
What else is there left to say other than the juice is freshly squeezed and the coffee is stronger than a whiff of a Cuban cigar on a clear morning? Book ahead on weekends or prepare to drool while you wait.

Korean Bathhouses have serenity. They're a place to clear the mind, pores and soul. They have the perfect combination of water: cold, hot and high-pressured, plus a big 'ol sauna to sweat it out in. What they don't always mention is they also have more old bratwurst than a German fall out shelter.
The Koreans will tell you, there's nothing more manly than sweating it out in a room full of weathered old-timers. It's sort of like telling legends by the campfire, passing on history though the ages - but here it's done over steam and showers and to be honest, it's a little uncomfortable.
I pushed through however and despite the initial awkwardness - I've got to say, after a match of squash it helped loosen a tight muscle or two. But be organised, if you're not prepared to go traditional - pack the Speedos.

So it has been sitting on the other side of the river for a while, and it's about time I mentioned it really. According to my research we are not alone in having a wheel, heaps of cities have them, but unless you are in Perth or our fine city then you are plum out of luck in Aus if you want to ride on a 'wheel'. It takes about 15 minutes and the views of Brisbane are truly lovely, and if you are all romantic you can book a gondola just for two, how wonderfully sappy. - BE

The Dutch. Synonymous with faked landscapes, Poffertje gobbling, and crazy people who try to runover the Dutch Queen. Oh, and cream of the crop designers and architects. Parra; he knows all about it. He's got a brand new collection of T-shirts called "Wonderful Lie", exemplifying the wackiness of the Dutch imagination. He's like a Bosch who liked The Beatles, and got magically reincarnated to regale his true tales of the uncanny.
Parra has worked with Nike, Vans, Etnies, and Heineken, to name but a few. He also runs his own store, Rockwell, exhibits throughout the world, and plays music with his bands Le Le and Parra Soundsystem. Even Madonna likes him!
Anyway, back to the shirts. If you want to hear a wonderful lie, a ridiculous confabulation, something that turns your world into a Roald Dahl novel, don one of these shirts and some random with a story will surely find you. Parra's shirts are available from Combined on Ann Street for $65, but thanks to Oliver from said store, we have one T-Shirt and sticker pack to give away!
To enter, just answer the following question.
This week's question:
