When Brian Chase is not playing drums for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs he is playing drums in a duo with saxophonist Seth Misterka. Together they play an experimental form of minimalist free jazz (also, Seth is running for President). They have very kindly contributed to our collection of mixtapes! We emailed some questions to their publicist, not realising that they would be forwarded on separately. So now we have answers from each of them that are funny when you see them next to each other. Enjoy!

1. How long have you guys been playing together.
BC: We first played together in 2004, I believe.
SM: Since the stone age.

2.What were you hoping for when you first formed the band?

BC: We had no hopes save to enjoy the experience of playing together.
SM: Sports Cars and Rolex Watches.

3. We've heard you described as 'New Ambient Cool Free Jazz'. Does that sound about right?
BC: That description could sound about right in the sense that it recognises the qualities of accessibility in our approach to a genre that is more typically regarded as obtuse and difficult.
SM: That sounds about right. Or you could call it ‘Stoner Rock'. Either way.

4.People can get all weird and scared when they hear the words 'Free Jazz'. Have they really got anything to be scared of?
BC: And people get equally weird and scared when they hear the words referring to 'techno pop' or 'alternative rock.'  Wait a minute, Seth also plays in a techno pop band and I also play in an alternative rock band...
SM: We are all more scared of freedom than we think. What we really ought to be afraid of is ‘Slavery Jazz'.

5. What can people expect from your shows (in three words)?
BC: Your time now.
SM: Saxophone And Drums.

6. Are you excited to be supporting Tortoise?
BC: Yes. They are great and very supportive of new music.
SM: Yes, I've been a fan for many years. Many thanks to the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Heathen Skulls for making it possible.

7. Seth, when did you decide that you wanted to be President, and how is the campaign going?
SM: I first decided to run for US President in 2006 or so. My platform is simple:
1)    Legalise Marijuana
2)    Repeal the federal income tax
3)    End all these stupid and expensive wars and start getting along with the rest of the world
War is expensive. Peace is profitable. Honestly, I don't really care about the presidency. It's just an ego trip for all these politicians. I see the office as a tool for the transformation of consciousness. I'm not running against anyone, or trying to beat the political parties. Fighting is stupid and counter-productive. My campaign is more like an absurdist art project, but this is an absurd world. Seth 2012. The world as we know it is ending in 2012, so why not?
